At one point or another we have all encountered a truck that is slammed down over a wide set of tires and the outer edge of the tire is sliced up from contacting the lip of the fenderwell. There are many ways to roll the fenderwell lip to prevent those expensive tires from getting cut-up when the suspension sacks out. Hammers, pliers, baseball bats, and even tin snips have all been used in the past. Pliers and hammers will leave uneven results and tear up the paint.

A baseball bat will give you smooth results, but it’s very sketchy having someone drive your truck forward and back while you try and control the bat rolling between the tire and fender. It’s very unsafe and we’ve seen someone’s toe get crushed in the process. Tin snips will give you clearance, but the edge of the fender becomes very weak and can buckle. As you can tell, these tools will get the job done but they won’t do it as good as a tool specifically designed for the task.

The engineers at Eastwood built this very beefy tool to increase tire and fender clearance, flare fenders, and/or repair wheel arch collision damage. This pro-grade tool is made to bolt to the hub and allow you to progressively roll the lip on the fender, increasing clearance while bending the sharp edge out of the way and preventing it from cutting the sidewall of the tire. We got a little seat time with this tool, and it worked so well we will never go back to using a bat again.

1
Park the vehicle on a level, solid surface. Apply a lug wrench on one wheel lug nut. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to turn the nut three revolutions. Repeat this process for the additional lug nuts.

2
Position a car jack under the vehicle and raise it so the tire is about 4 inches off the ground. Remove each lug nut with the wrench turned counterclockwise then pull them straight off.

3
Place one hand on each side of the wheel and pull it straight off.

4
Align the bolt holes in the fender roller flange with the lug bolts on the wheel and push the fender roller onto the wheel. Put a wheel nut on each lug bolt and tighten it clockwise.

5
Turn the hand wheel on the left side of the fender roller counterclockwise to loosen the top shaft. Center the top wheel against the inner fender lip. Hold the roller in place and tighten the hand wheel, turning it clockwise to lock it in position.

6
Rotate the release lever on the right upper side of the fender roller to change the angle of the roller on the lip so it sits flush with the fender lip. Turn the lever in the direction that the roller needs to move. For example, turn the lever away from you to move the roller away from you and towards you to move the roller towards you.

7
Turn the pressure bar at the bottom of the fender roller clockwise to apply gentle pressure to the fender lip.

8
Squeeze the trigger of a heat gun and guide it over the fender lip to warm the area. Pass the heat gun left and right over the fender lip for about four minutes.

9
Grasp the center of the fender roller with one hand and swing it left and right to depress the fender lip. When the roller is pressing the lip, the tool will need more pressure to continue the process. Tighten the pressure bar to hold the roller securely against the lip. Continue this process, adding heat and tightening the roller until the lip presses outward and is flat.

10
Remove the roller by releasing the pressure bar in a counterclockwise direction, removing each wheel nut in a clockwise direction and pulling the roller straight off.

11
Place the new wider tires on rims onto the lug nuts. Release the car jack to let the wheel touch the ground and tighten each lug nut completely in a clockwise direction.

Hey does anyone know where i can get my fenders rolled in central new jersey ive called a couple of body shops?

Answer:

There is a guy in south jersey that is a fender rolling guru. he works out of his home in millville, nj and has rolled thousands of fenders including my infiniti. he frequently does rolling for bmw clubs and has even done a maserati. and best of all he only charges $25 a fender. i will post his info later when i get home.

i roll fenders in south jersey. i am professional and very experienced, (over 300 cars and counting).

my prices are as follows $25 per fender or $75 for all 4 fenders. i use the eastwood fender roller and a heat gun. i am very careful and particular as if the car were my own. ill do it while you wait and the whole car usually takes only about 45-60 mins.

Fender rolling is a process in which one makes more clearance in the fender arches of a vehicle. Typically this process allows for the use of wider/taller tires without the rubbing that normally comes with wider/taller tires.

Seen above is one type of fender rolling tool. The tool bolts on to the wheel hub. Spacers are needed in the back if the roller will not rotate enough.

1. For perfect results the paint on the fender needs to be heated up. If the paint is not heated it is sure to crack when pressure is applied to the metal, this will result in a sure trip to the local paint shop. A heat gun should be used as it is the best and most efficient way of heating the paint. A nice little accessory to the heat gun is a laser pointed thermometer. The thermometer will ensure that one is at the correct temperature of 125-140 degrees F for the fender rolling process to proceed. If a thermometer is not available, the heat of the paint can be described as the temperature of a dark car on a hot summer day. Remember to check the heat of the paint regularly, if the temperature drops it will result in cracking.

2. Align the roller so that the rubber roller contacts the fender where the lip is protruding. Make sure that the angle of the roller will bend the whole lip and not just curve the edge in. To receive a constant roll on the entire length of the fender one will have to make constant adjustments, adjust for correct length, angle, and pressure along the curve. The handle with the two black balls on it adjust for pressure on the fender.

The silver knob on the right side of the roller is for adjusting the length of the arm. The black handle on the left side adjusts the angle of the roller mechanism. Once everything is adjusted to the proper settings, the rolling can begin. Roll in small increments pushing the fender lip in about 2-3 mm at a time, this will ensure that the fender and paint will have time to rest between rolling.

3. This picture illustrates how the roller has to be adjusted for length. If the length is too short the roller may slip off possibly hurting the operator or the fender, if the length is too long the roller may damage the inside of the fender resulting in protrusions that may be visible from the outside of the car (not good and hard to fix).

4. Keep an eye on the position of the roller at all times during the rolling process, this will ensure that no mistakes are made. If one can not see the position of the roller ones fingers can be used to measure the gaps between the roller and the fender lip, and between the fender lip and the fender. By the end of the rolling process the gap between the fender and lip should be gone, thus making for the most possible room.

5. One can see how flat the fender lip is after rolling. There is no longer any lip on the fender. As one can see I flared the fenders a bit to make for even more room. The stock fender on the left shows how the fender slants towards the car, the rolled fender on the right no longer slants towards the car, it is now vertical.

Using the fender roller is easy. Once you have it bolted to the hub, you then have to adjust the length of the arm and the angle of the roller. Now all you have to do is to roll it back and forth while keeping the pressure and applying heat using a good heat gun to roll the lip of the fender. Readjust as necessary to achieve best results.

Don’t let the metal become too hot or burn the paint by keeping it moving around. It is only to keep the paint from cracking. Getting bigger wheels will require fender rolling but that is not always the case. It will also depend how big the wheel you are getting is which depends on the rim and the size of the tires.

Your suspension will somehow be a deciding factor if it has seen some damage. It is time to use a fender roller or rent fender roller if you don’t have one of your own and want to do it yourself. Sometimes rubbing will leave marks on the fender that will require some work if it isn’t that worse that it cuts and scrape your tires.

It is recommended to have a professional do the fender rolling if you don’t have a fender roller which costs around 400-500 dollars. Doing it yourself and using a fender roller rental is also a viable option although not that easy to find a good fender roller.

Amazon Customer Review:

I was a little apprehensive about purchasing a tool from a company that I had never heard of and not being able to inspect it first. Being a profesional mechanic, tools are very important to me. I was very pleased after opening the box and finding a well made tool inside. After using it a few times I am now even more pleased. If anyone has used the other company’s tool that looks remarkably like this one, I think you will also be pleased and save a few bucks in the process.
It is a good quality tool that was easy to use and did a wonderful job. I would recommend it to anyone.

The Eastwood roller is a great tool – just don’t expect to bolt it onto your hub and get perfect results without a little trial-and-error. Use a heat gun to warm the paint and prevent cracking, but be advised too much heat will also harm the paint. Also, be advised that once the lip rolls past about 45 degrees you are likely to crack the paint no matter what you do.

I have found that this tool does NOT work on all cars. Wheel offsets and fender types have some impact on the amount of adjustment range from model to model, and in most cases I would not attempt to use this tool to roll a rear arch, as they are usually 2-3 layers of metal thick and you will damage these areas. A better option is to cut the metal away and reseal with an appropriate body panel bonding adhesive.

If you need to gain a little clearance for front tires, this tool might help you out. Unfortunately it’s quite expensive given it’s limited use coupled with the fact that it simply won’t fit some cars. As a shop owner this tool has payed for itself, as I charge about $40 to roll fenders. I also rent the tool out for $20/day… but on more than one occasion the renter used the tool improperly and had to pay me to repair the resulting damage. Be careful and take your time.
